As a sedation dentist, I know that a fear of dental phobia can be detrimental to your oral health. I constantly see patients that haven’t been to the dentist in years because they are scared of what will happen when they make that appointment and come in for their exam. I’m Dr. James DeFinnis and I am here to tell you about the sedation methods I use here at Back Mountain Dental.
The main method of sedation that I use on my patients is IV sedation. I use IV sedation on patients that are uncomfortable in a dentists’ office, hate the smell and sounds of a dentist office, have a strong gag reflex, are having invasive procedures done, and many other reasons. IV sedation is also great for patients who want to have the work of several appointments done in just one or two and who want little to no memory of the dental procedure. IV sedation can be a great alternative to the anxiety that you may face when you go to the dentist, but there are certain things to expect when undergoing sedation.
It is important to know that you will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment because you will be undergoing sedation. I will monitor your vital signs, including your heart rate and blood pressure, to make sure you stay completely safe throughout your whole procedure. You will be totally relaxed and comfortable throughout your entire procedure. Once it is safe to leave my office, you will need to go straight home and rest for the rest of the day.
IV sedation is very safe and the medication can be reversed at any time if you begin to feel sick or uncomfortable. You will never be unconscious during a procedure, but you will be completely relaxed, comfortable, and anxiety free.
I have had formal training in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and have all the equipment needed for proper sedation right here in my office. I also have post graduate hospital-based residency experience and multiple continuing education classes in the area of IV sedation.
It is important to remember that everyone’s sedation experience is different. I would love to sit down and discuss your dental and sedation needs with you. If you want the smile you have always dreamed of without the anxiety, please call my office and schedule your consultation.
