You probably realize how much what you eat affects your health. And you have a lot of factors to consider when planning and preparing meals: sugar intake, vitamins, minerals, fiber, calorie count. The food you eat affects the condition of your digestive system, heart, muscles, and skin, just to name a few. I’m Dr. James DeFinnis, a Trucksville, PA, dentist, and I want you to know how your diet can positively impact your dental health.
These foods are wonderful for your teeth:
- Celery provides two dental benefits: chewing it produces extra saliva and neutralizes bad bacteria, and the stringy parts of the vegetable slide between your teeth and act as natural dental floss.
- Mushrooms are rich in Vitamin D, which helps with calcium absorption, thus keeping your teeth strong. Vitamin D also has anti-inflammatory effects which help you fend off gum diesease. Furthermore, shiitake mushrooms contain lentinan, a sugar that prevents plaque production.
- Onions produce a strong odor, but they also contain strong antibacterial compounds.
- Strawberries don’t stain your teeth like you might expect. In fact, they contain malic acid (also in apples) which cleans and whitens teeth!
Other examples of tooth-healthy foods include apples, carrots, cheese, green tea, licorice, and sesame seeds. If you plan your diet well, you’ll be making the right steps to good oral and overall health.
